Locos got back to winning ways with their biggest victory of the season at Mackessack Park. Two goals in each half saw the Railwaymen cruise past a young Rothes team.
Daniel Agnew was handed a first start by Dean Donaldson, while Blair Smith and Thomas Reid also came into the team. Locos had an early opportunity when Agnew raced onto a pass from Cole Anderson but home goalkeeper Sam Inglis came out quickly to get a hand to the ball as the striker tried to knock it past him. Smith then went close with a curling effort from the edge of the box.
Agnew did get his first goal for the club on 24 minutes though. Again he was released by Anderson and made no mistake in slotting past Inglis.
Locos were dominant and Anderson went close before Mark Souter doubled the lead a few minutes before the break. After Rothes cleared following a goalmouth scramble, Calum Dingwall’s ball back into the box fell at the feet of Souter, who turned before lashing home from 12 yards.
Meres twice went close after the break, before Locos were awarded a penalty on the hour mark. Cole Anderson got on the end of a pass by Lloyd Robertson and was felled by Jamie Young. Aidan Wilson was brought on from the bench and his first job was to fire the spot kick high into the net.
Less than 10 minutes later, Zane Laird also came close to scoring with his first touch after coming onto the pitch. His effort was blocked, but from the resulting corner Locos did extend their lead. Inglis got a hand to Logan Johnstone’s header towards goal but it fell to Dingwall to nod home from virtually on the goal line.
Locos had further chances to score in the final stages with Inglis twice denying Wilson and Reuben Skea firing off target. However, with a result well beyond them, the hosts enjoyed their strongest period in the game. Zack Ellis was called upon to save from Kenzie Shepherd and Ross Logan but made sure he maintained a clean sheet as Locos saw out a another good result.
This was a comfortable win for Locos, who may even feel they should have had more goals to show for their dominance over a Rothes team who looked short on confidence. Nevertheless, Dean Donaldson will be delighted that the impressive start to the season continues and will be hoping to extend that on Wednesday evening when Turriff United visit Harlaw Park.
