Locos secured a second successive 4-0 victory with an excellent performance against Turriff United. All four goals came in a first half in which the Railwaymen blew the visitors away with a display as good as any seen from this team in recent seasons.
Turriff had more of a foothold in the game after the break as Locos struggled to maintain the breathtaking tempo of the opening period. Zack Ellis was rarely troubled though, and the result was never in doubt.
Paul Coutts, Jay Halliday and Aidan Wilson came back into the team after starting Saturday’s game on the bench.
Locos tested Lee Herbert early on, with the United keeper saving from Lloyd Robertson and Dan Agnew. At the other end, Zack Ellis palmed away a shot across goal and kept out a Reece McKeown header.
Locos took the lead through skipper Greg Mitchell. His first effort through a crowded penalty area came back to him off Agnew and he made no mistake at the second time of asking, driving low into the bottom corner.
Locos came close to doubling their lead almost immediately when Cole Anderson brought a fine save from Herbert before Wilson took the ball down well on his chest but fired narrowly over the bar. The Railwaymen were flooding forward at every opportunity and the second goal that seemed inevitable came ten minutes after the first. The referee played a good advantage when Jay Halliday was clattered after playing a perfect pass for Anderson. The season’s top scorer showed composure to create space before firing home.
Locos intensity was causing the away side constant problems and the third goal came from another fine move. The ball was played across the penalty area from left to right with Halliday again playing the final ball for Wilson to sweep home first time.
The home fans inside Harlaw Park were loving what they were seeing and Lloyd Robertson delivered a fourth goal on the stroke of half time, cleverly looping a header over Herbert from Callum Dingwall’s lifted ball into the box.
With the result seemingly secured, the second half was a more closely fought affair but Locos maintained control. Neither goalkeeper was unduly troubled and an Owen Kinsella header just off target was as close as the visitors came to denying Ellis a fourth clean sheet of the season.
Coach Jamie Lennox felt the first half was probably Locos best performance since Dean Donaldson and his team arrived at the club and few would disagree. Turriff simply couldn’t cope with the pace and movement that saw the game effectively done and dusted by half time.
Saturday sees us make the long trip to Brora to take on the team one place and two points above us and the squad will no doubt be full of confidence heading into that match.
